Visiting from abroad

For visitors from abroad

What an international traveller needs to know before and during a trip to the Nilgiris — visa and registration, permits, forests, a local SIM, money and emergency help.

This is a community guide, not official immigration advice. Rules and fees change — always confirm on the official government portals linked below (marked ↗). The Nilgiris Guide is an independent project, not a government website.

Visa & entry

Most travellers enter India on an e-Visa. Apply only on the Government of India's official portal — it openly warns against look-alike intermediary sites that charge extra.

The e-Tourist Visa comes in 30-day, one-year and five-year versions, alongside business, medical and student categories. Apply at least four days before you travel, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months. Print your approved travel authorisation and carry it for immigration.

Do you need to register? (FRRO)

Ordinary tourists on a short e-Tourist or tourist visa do not register with the authorities. Registration with the FRRO applies only to long stays — more than 180 days on a long-term visa such as student, employment, research or medical — and is done online on the e-FRRO portal.

If you stay in a hotel, homestay or guesthouse, your host is required to report your stay to the FRRO (the 'Form C' filing). That is the accommodation provider's responsibility, not yours — but it is why you will be asked for your passport and visa at check-in.

The exact registration window and the list of long-term visa types can change — confirm on the e-FRRO portal's own FAQ.

Permits — none needed here

Good news: Tamil Nadu and the Nilgiris are not in India's Protected Area / Restricted Area Permit zone. That regime covers parts of the North-East, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and a few border areas — not Ooty, Coonoor or Kotagiri. You can travel freely around the hill stations as any visitor would.

Forests & wildlife safari

Safaris at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve are run by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and booked through its official platform; some entry is allotted on the spot at the Theppakadu reception. Foreign nationals usually pay a higher entry rate than Indian visitors.

Safari and entry fees change every season — treat any figure you see online as indicative and confirm the current rate at the official portal or the reception.

Getting a SIM card

To buy a local SIM you'll need your passport, a valid Indian visa and a passport photo. SIMs are sold as prepaid and their validity is tied to your visa period. BSNL offers a tourist SIM for e-Visa holders at major airports; for other operators you may be asked for a local reference.

Money, emergencies & consular help

India's single emergency number is 112. You can also reach police on 100, an ambulance on 108 and fire on 101. The Nilgiris district control room — useful during landslides or road closures — is 1077.

Foreign consulates are based in Chennai, not in the hills. If you lose your passport or need consular help, find your country's mission through the Ministry of External Affairs directory rather than an unofficial listing.

Weather, health & getting around

Ooty and Kotagiri sit around 2,000–2,200 m. The altitude is mild — the real thing to plan for is cold, changeable weather rather than altitude sickness, so pack a warm layer and rain protection. The Nilgiris catch two monsoons, so rain and the occasional landslide or road closure are possible roughly between June and December; check local advisories before mountain drives.

Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is a sensible precaution. If you're driving up, note that private vehicles need a hill e-pass.
