Ootacamund Gymkhana Golf Club
Laid out across the open, rolling Wenlock Downs at around 7,000 feet, the Ootacamund Gymkhana's 18-hole course is one of the most beautiful natural golf settings in the world — fairways winding between sholas and grassland under big Nilgiri skies.
Official websiteHistory
The course was begun in 1889 by Colonel Ross Thompson, the Executive Engineer of the Nilgiris; in 1891 a nine-hole layout was formed on the Downs with the Municipal Council's permission, and the name 'Gymkhana Golf Club' came into use in 1896.
It has since grown into a full 18-hole course and remains the centre of golfing life in Ooty.
Set at 7,000 ft, the thin mountain air adds roughly 7% to your distance — and nine of the eighteen holes play blind from the tee, making for a quirky, memorable round.
