The Ooty Races
Each summer the cool, high-altitude Ooty Race Course comes alive with morning horse racing — a Nilgiris institution since the 1890s, run by the historic Madras Race Club.
History
Racing has been held at Ooty since the 1890s — a formal meeting under Turf Club rules took place on 18 May 1894, and the race stand was completed in 1898.
The Madras Race Club, one of the oldest in the country, runs its summer season here from April to June, with winter racing at Guindy in Chennai. The Ooty track is a tight, picturesque circuit barely a mile round, set against the hills near the railway station.
