Wellington Gymkhana Club

Wellington, Coonoor

One of India's oldest clubs, the Wellington Gymkhana traces back to 1873 and is built around what many rate the finest hill golf course in the country — an 18-hole layout in a green valley between the cantonment of Wellington and the town of Coonoor.

History

The Club's roots lie in the British garrison at Wellington: a brick cricket pavilion was raised in 1873 to give the soldiers recreation, and the name 'Wellington Gymkhana' was formally adopted in 1916.

Originally for the armed forces alone, it later opened to civilians — Col Rajkumar Devraj Urs became its first Indian member in 1943. It remains closely tied to the military stations of the Nilgiris while welcoming members from across the country.

Membership

Membership spans serving and retired armed-forces officers and civilians. The Club maintains reciprocal affiliations with many gymkhana and golf clubs across India and abroad, useful for visiting members.
