Off the beaten path
Rangaswamy Peak & Pillar

A sacred conical peak and a detached rock pillar above Kotagiri, ringed by Badaga and Irula legend and a demanding day-trek.

The peak and the nearby free-standing 'pillar' are both sacred sites; a temple to Rangaswamy sits below.

The full circuit is a long, exposed day-hike best done with a local guide from a nearby hatti.

Approach the shrines respectfully — they remain in active ritual use by the hill communities.

Several local legends attach to the peak and pillar; these are living oral traditions and accounts vary between communities.
